Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) patriarch Parkash Singh Badal, the former Chief Minister of Punjab passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at the Fortis Hospital in Mohali. He was 95.
The last rites will be performed on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at his native village Badal in Lambi, Muktsar. According to the Fortis Hospital statement, Badal was admitted on April 16, 2023, with acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu and several Chief Ministers expressed grief and paid last tributes to Parkash Singh Badal. "He was a colossal figure of Indian politics, and a remarkable statesman who contributed greatly to our nation. He worked tirelessly for the progress of Punjab and anchored the state through critical times," PM Modi wrote on Twitter.

The Jat Sikh was elected as the Chief Minister of the state five times, first in 1970 as the youngest CM in the country, then in 1977-80, 1997-2002, 2007-12 and 2012-2017. He was elected into the assembly 11 times. Badal was conferred with Padma Vibhushan in 2015, which he returned in 2020 during the protest against three contentious farm laws. He is survived by his son Sukhbir Singh Badal and daughter Parneet Kaur. His wife Surinder Kaur Badal passed away in May 2011 due to cancer.
