Hoboken Mayor Ravinder S. Bhalla misses out on Congress seat

Bhalla also congratulated Congressman Menendez on his victory, expressing a commitment to collaborate on improving the quality of life for residents in Hoboken and the broader 8th District.

Hoboken Mayor Ravinder S. Bhalla faced defeat in the Democratic primary for New Jersey's 8th Congressional District. Incumbent Congressman Rob Menendez emerged victorious with 53.7 percent of the vote, while Bhalla secured 35.8 percent and fellow challenger Kyle Jasey garnered percent

In his statement after the results, Bhalla expressed pride in his campaign's efforts, stating, "While tonight wasn’t the outcome we desired, I’m tremendously proud of the campaign we ran. Democracy won, and the people of our District - for the first time in years - had a true choice at the ballot box." 

Then Indian American acknowledged the challenges of taking on the status quo but emphasized the importance of participating in the democratic process to drive change.
 



Bhalla also congratulated Congressman Menendez on his victory, expressing a commitment to collaborate on improving the quality of life for residents in Hoboken and the broader 8th District. He extended his gratitude to his supporters, family, and the voters of the district, noting their confidence in him and their engagement in the political process.

Bhalla's political career began with his election to the Hoboken City Council in 2010. He was elected Mayor in 2017 and reelected unopposed in 2021. Under his leadership, Hoboken has been recognized for its initiatives in creating safer streets and promoting sustainability. 
His administration launched the Vision Zero initiative, aimed at eliminating traffic-related deaths and reducing injuries, and significantly expanded bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bhalla implemented the Business Recovery Plan, providing vital support to local businesses through outdoor dining options, grant funding, and the Hoboken Relief Fund. His efforts have been instrumental in maintaining Hoboken’s vibrant community and economy during challenging times.

Despite the loss, Bhalla remains committed to serving Hoboken. "Serving as Mayor of Hoboken has been, and continues to be, the honor of my lifetime. I look forward to continuing to serve the residents of our great city," he stated.
