OpenAI has promoted Indian-origin technology executive Uday Ruddaraju to Chief Technology Officer, Compute, the company's compute and infrastructure leader announced in a LinkedIn post.
"I'm excited to share that I'm stepping into the CTO, Compute role at OpenAI," Ruddaraju wrote in the post, which was made visible to the public on and off LinkedIn.
He said his first 12 months at OpenAI had been "incredibly rewarding," with the Compute team working relentlessly to bring capacity online quickly and reliably while handling deep systems work across compute, network, storage and machine learning needed to train frontier models such as GPT-5.6. "As we scale, the problems only get harder that require pushing the frontiers and innovating across every layer (literally) of the stack," he wrote.

Ruddaraju said OpenAI is "on a mission to build the world's largest compute footprint so frontier AI can reach everyone and every workflow," adding that the company has "a very exciting compute ramp and roadmap coming up," spanning large-scale distributed systems, hardware, manufacturing and data centre construction across civil, mechanical and electrical engineering. "There is a lot to build across large scale distributed systems, hardware, manufacturing, and data center builds," he wrote, adding that the team is hiring "exceptional people across the stack."
In the post, Ruddaraju pointed followers toward open roles at OpenAI, including positions for Data Center and Compute Infrastructure and Software Engineer, Compute Infrastructure, both based in San Francisco and listed on the company's official careers site, inviting prospective candidates to "come build with us."
According to his LinkedIn and X profiles, Ruddaraju joined OpenAI in July 2025 as Head of Compute and Infrastructure, a role he has now held for a year before his elevation to CTO, Compute. His X bio currently describes him as "CTO, Compute @OpenAI," and references prior stints at xAI, Robinhood and eBay.
Before joining OpenAI, Ruddaraju served as Head of Infrastructure Engineering at xAI and X between June 2024 and July 2025. Prior to that, he spent nearly six years at Robinhood in a series of engineering leadership roles, followed by more than five years at eBay in progressively senior engineering positions.
His LinkedIn and X profiles list his education as the University of Minnesota, where he also worked as a Research Assistant before beginning his industry career.
The appointment comes as OpenAI continues to expand its compute and data centre infrastructure to support the training and deployment of its frontier AI models, an effort Ruddaraju's post positioned as central to making advanced AI systems more widely accessible.
