Indian American researches India's transgender law in Kolkata

An Indian American undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania is spending the summer in Kolkata researching how India's 2026 transgender rights law is being implemented in West Bengal through a fellowship with the university's South Asia Center.

Nikhil Pochana, a member of Penn's Class of 2028 majoring in political science with minors in South Asian studies and neuroscience, is a 2026 summer research intern with the Penn South Asia Center. He is working alongside Kolkata Anandam for Equality and Justice (KAEJ), a Kolkata-based grassroots LGBTQ advocacy organization, according to the center.
