Cal State honors Ami Bera with inaugural public leadership award
The honor recognizes efforts to expand federal support and access for students across California’s public university system.

California State University has awarded Indian American Congressman Ami Bera (CA-06) its inaugural Chancellor’s Public Leadership Award.
The award was presented by CSU Chancellor Mildred García to Bera and Rep. Jay Obernolte in recognition of their leadership in reviving the California Public Higher Education Caucus and advancing support for public higher education across the state.

The CSU said the recognition honors bipartisan efforts to strengthen advocacy for students and institutions through the caucus.
The announcement was made during CSU Hill Week, an annual advocacy initiative in Washington, D.C., where university leaders and lawmakers engage on federal priorities, including funding, financial aid and student access.
In a statement posted on social media, Bera said he was “honored to receive the inaugural Chancellor’s Public Leadership Award” and described himself as “a proud product of California’s public schools.”
“As co-chair of the California Public Higher Education Caucus, I know firsthand that access to a high-quality education expands opportunity and keeps the American Dream within reach,” Bera said.
The California Democrat added that he would continue working with the CSU “to advocate for students and strengthen the future of public higher education in California.”
The CSU system, which comprises 23 campuses and serves hundreds of thousands of students, is the largest four-year public university system in the United States and plays a key role in the state’s workforce pipeline.
The award marks the first time the CSU has conferred the Chancellor’s Public Leadership Award, establishing a new recognition for federal lawmakers supporting higher education policy and funding.
