Indian-origin woman shot dead in Toronto
Toronto Police charged a Punjab-born man with first-degree murder after a fatal shooting following a brief interaction.

A 26-year-old Indian-origin woman from Punjab was shot dead in Toronto after what police described as a "brief interaction" with a 37-year-old man, also from Punjab. The accused has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the killing.
The victim was identified by Toronto Police as Navneet Kaur, 26, a Toronto resident. The suspect was identified as Sharnjeet Singh, 37, who was based in Brampton.
According to a statement issued by Toronto Police, officers responded to a shooting call at about on July 24 in the Humberwood Boulevard and Rexdale Boulevard area.
Police alleged that Kaur and Singh were involved in a "brief interaction" before the shooting. Authorities said the relationship between the victim and the accused has not yet been determined.
Investigators described the shooting as a "targeted attack" in Etobicoke. Police said Singh fled the scene before officers arrived.
"The suspect shot the victim," the police statement said.
"Life-saving measures were performed, but the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene."
Police said the suspect fled before officers reached the location. Following further investigation, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police located and arrested him.
"The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival and, after continued investigation, officers with Ontario Provincial Police located and arrested the suspect," the statement read.
In addition to the first-degree murder charge, Singh has also been charged with failing to comply with an undertaking, according to police.
Toronto Police said they are continuing to investigate the case and are seeking additional information about the incident.
A witness who was having coffee nearby told police he saw a man approach the woman and speak with her briefly before opening fire.
The shooting also prompted concerns among residents about safety in the neighborhood.
Singh was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto on July 25 morning.
Police have not released additional details about a possible motive. Investigators have only said that the victim and the suspect had a "brief interaction" before the shooting and that the nature of their relationship remains unknown.
The investigation remains ongoing as Toronto Police continue to seek information related to the fatal shooting.
