Ekal Vidyalaya DFW Chapter to Host Kathak on the Silver Screen
The event will be marked by the presence of several community leaders, dignitaries, and elected officials

Ekal Vidyalaya DFW Chapter will present "Kathak on the Silver Screen" on Aug. 28, at the Granville Arts Center in Garland, Texas.
The evening will feature dinner followed by a Kathak performance led by renowned Kathak dancer Akhila Rao. The event aims to raise awareness and support for Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing education and holistic development opportunities in remote village schools across India. Proceeds from the fundraiser will help expand educational initiatives and community development programs in underserved rural areas.
The event will be marked by the presence of several community leaders, dignitaries, and elected officials. The evening will also include a special tribute to the late Dhiren Kuntawala, the first president of the Ekal DFW Chapter, in recognition of his contributions to the organization.
Speakers at the event will include current Ekal DFW President Meenu Suhalka, Vice President Hemant Kale and Ekal Youth President Yahvi Suhalka, who will discuss the organization's mission and ongoing initiatives.
Ekal's flagship education program focuses on identifying underserved villages in India and providing them quality education. This Ekal program will also highlight the Panchmukhi Shiksha program that aims at strengthening five core aspects: education, skill development, including empowering women and computer labs, health care, farming, and character education.
"Currently Ekal covers 93,000 villages, but the task is not done. There are so many more that need to be discovered, and they need help," said Prem Suhalka, coordinator for the Ekal Kathak event.
Speaking with NIA, Prem Suhalka told the correspondent about the Kathak performers' live experiences. He praised the group's stunning costumes, synchronized choreography, professional lighting, crystal-clear sound and spectacular LED visuals that brought the audience to its feet. Prem said the event will mesmerize viewers. The combination of Kathak's timeless grace with iconic Bollywood memories will create an unforgettable theatrical experience that the audience will not forget.
Kathak Rhythms founder Akhila Rao, based in Plano, Texas, is also the director of "Kathak on the Silver Screen." She has trained more than 300 students, and many of them have accomplished Vishaarad (graduation) level, as well as completed their Rang Manch Pravesh. Recipient of the "Singar Mani" title, awarded by Sur-Singar Samsad at the Kal-Ke-Kalakaar Festival in 1981, she was also the winner of the "Menaka Trophy" for Kathak at the Bombay University Youth Festival.
