Brampton declares April Sikh Heritage Month
Mayor Patrick Brown hailed the Sikh community for its contributions and noted the community is flourishing in the city during the announcement.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown announced April 11 that April 2026 will be celebrated as Sikh Heritage Month in the City of Brampton.
The celebration recognized the rich history, culture and contributions of Sikh Canadians, and the values of seva, or selfless service, equality and compassion that continue to strengthen the city.
During his address, the mayor hailed the Sikh community for its contributions and noted the community is flourishing in the city.
Highlighting the significance of the month, the mayor said at a public event, “Sikh Heritage Month, of course, coincides with Vaisakhi, coincides with the celebration of the birth of the Khalsa, and I think during Sikh Heritage Month it’s an opportunity to celebrate the Sikh values.
He continued, “Part of the beauty of Canada is if one community faces discrimination, we stick up for each other, we fight for each other. That’s at the core of what this country is about.”
The annual tradition was continued by Mayor Brown, who, after the proclamation, handed over an official signed copy of the proclamation to community leaders and posed for photographs with them.

Councillor Gurpartap Singh Toor attended the event and remarked, “During the month of April, which is Sikh Heritage Month, the entire community gets together right in front of City Hall to raise the Sikh flag.”
He continued, “So wishing everybody that’s watching this a happy Sikh Heritage Month and happy Vaisakhi.”

After the event, City Councillor Paul Vicente said, “I want to wish all the people of the Sikh faith here in the City of Brampton a very happy Sikh Heritage Month, happy Vaisakhi to all of you.”
Sharing glimpses of the event on social media, he also noted, “Brampton is proud to be home to a vibrant Sikh community whose impact is felt in every corner of our city. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate and reflect together.”
Sikh Heritage Month is observed every year in April to celebrate the rich history, culture, traditions and contributions of the Sikh community in Canada and around the world.
The month provides an opportunity to recognize the values of equality, service (seva) and resilience embodied by the Sikh faith, while honoring the significant achievements of Sikh Canadians in various fields, including business, politics, arts and public service.
