Americans4Hindus, a national nonpartisan civic engagement organization, endorsed Andrew Friedson for Montgomery County executive during a reception held June 7 at the Potomac home of community leader Dr. Suresh C. Gupta, drawing nearly 50 community leaders, supporters and civic advocates.
According to the organization, the event exceeded its fundraising goal and was aimed at building support for Friedson's campaign ahead of the June 23 Democratic primary election.
Friedson addressed attendees during the reception and outlined his priorities for Montgomery County, including economic development, government accountability, public safety and support for faith-based communities.
The event was attended by several Americans4Hindus leaders, including Rajiv Sharma, national president of A4H PAC; Madhu Govil, president of the A4H PAC Virginia chapter; Vidya Mishra, president of the A4H PAC Maryland chapter; Ankur Misra, vice president of the A4H PAC Maryland chapter; Akhil Govil, trustee of the A4H PAC Virginia chapter; and Rajan Sood, trustee of the A4H PAC Maryland chapter.
The reception also featured an appearance by Rep. Sarah Elfreth, who joined attendees in discussing civic engagement and community participation.
In a statement, Dr. Romesh Japra, founder and chairman of Americans4Hindus, said the event reflected growing political involvement among Hindu Americans.
"The remarkable success of this event reflects a significant transformation taking place across our community," Japra said. "Hindu Americans are increasingly recognizing that meaningful change requires active participation in the political process."
He said the organization would continue building relationships with elected officials and candidates.
"We must continue building relationships with leaders who respect our values, understand our concerns, and are committed to serving all communities fairly and effectively," Japra said.
Japra also emphasized the importance of local elections.
"Local elections often have the greatest impact on our daily lives," he said. "From public safety and education to economic development and community services, local leadership matters. Americans4Hindus remains committed to empowering our community to engage, organize, and participate at every level of government."
As the Democratic primary approaches, Americans4Hindus said it plans to expand its voter outreach efforts in Montgomery County. The organization said volunteers will conduct door-to-door outreach focused on voter education, civic engagement and election participation among Hindu American households.
Misra said the turnout and fundraising results reflected strong interest in the election within the community.
"The outstanding turnout and fundraising success demonstrate that the Hindu American community is actively engaged and ready to make a difference," Misra said. "Andrew Friedson understands our values, respects our community, and is committed to building a stronger Montgomery County. We are proud to support his candidacy."
He added that the group's efforts would continue beyond the endorsement.
"Endorsements are only the first step," Misra said. "Our volunteers are energized and ready to engage voters across Montgomery County to help ensure strong civic participation in this important election."
