Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will appear in Netflix's upcoming documentary series The American Experiment, a five-part examination of American democracy premiering June 24 ahead of the nation's 250th anniversary.

The streaming platform said Harris will be among the interviewees featured in the documentary. Directed by Brian Knappenberger, the series explores the nation's founding, the American Revolution, the drafting of the Constitution and the challenges that have shaped democracy over nearly two and a half centuries.

Harris, the first woman, first Black American and first South Asian American to serve as U.S. vice president, appears alongside former Vice Presidents Mike Pence and Al Gore, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, and Representative Jamie Raskin.

The series revisits a question at the heart of the American Revolution – whether a people can successfully govern themselves – while examining issues including liberty, slavery, representation and political power.

“The approaching 250th anniversary of the United States offers a distinct opportunity to reflect on America’s founding and its future,” Adam Del Deo, Netflix's vice president of documentary, said in a statement. “The American Experiment presents an expansive dialogue about how American democracy has been built, challenged, and reimagined over nearly two and a half centuries.”

Produced by Luminant and Playtone, the series is executive produced by Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, Knappenberger and Sarah Huisenga. It also features historical reenactments, including Martin Sheen portraying George Washington.

The appearance marks one of Harris' highest-profile media projects since leaving office in January 2025 following her unsuccessful presidential bid against President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

Since then, Harris has remained active in public life through speeches, political advocacy and the publication of her memoir 107 Days, which recounts her 2024 campaign.
