Coinbase chief legal officer Paul Grewal has announced his resignation after six years at the cryptocurrency exchange, marking the end of a tenure during which he led the company through some of the industry's most significant legal and regulatory battles.

Grewal announced his decision in a LinkedIn post, saying he would transition to an advisory role at the end of July while continuing to serve on the board of Coinbase National Trust Company.

"After six years I'm leaving Coinbase," Grewal wrote, thanking CEO Brian Armstrong, president Emilie Choi and the company's board for "the opportunity of a lifetime." He also praised Coinbase's legal, policy, compliance and government investigations teams, calling them "the best... in the universe," and said he would remain "a Coinbase ally for life."

According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Grewal notified the company of his resignation on July 8, with his departure taking effect on July 31. Molly Abraham, currently vice president of legal, will succeed him as general counsel, while Ryan VanGrack will assume the newly created role of vice chairman and head of corporate affairs.

Grewal's tenure was defined by Coinbase's successful legal defense against the SEC's 2023 lawsuit alleging the exchange operated as an unregistered securities broker. The regulator later dropped the case, a landmark victory for Coinbase and the broader cryptocurrency industry.

He also played a prominent role in advocating for clearer U.S. cryptocurrency regulations, including supporting legislative efforts such as the Clarity Act.

Under a three-month advisory agreement through October 2026, Grewal will assist with the leadership transition.
