Former White House Senior Director Raj Panjabi has announced the launch of his first book, SAFER: A Playbook—Turning Fear Into Action and Crisis Into Community, with the book coming out on Oct. 13.
Published by HarperOne Books, the book is described by the author as a "playbook for all of us to navigate fear, mistrust and uncertainty."
SAFER is a practical guide by Panjabi that draws on his experiences from frontline epidemics to the White House to show how individuals and communities can turn fear into action, build resilience and navigate crises through trust and connection.
Dr. Raj Panjabi is a physician, entrepreneur and former White House senior director for global health security and biodefense. In this capacity, he served as then-President Joe Biden's top pandemic and health official at the National Security Council.
He is also the co-founder and former CEO of Last Mile Health, an organization that uses technology and community health workers to expand access to health care in some of the world's most remote regions.
Currently a board member of Co-Impact, Panjabi has been recognized by TIME as one of the world's 100 most influential people and one of the 50 most influential people in health, and has played key roles in global efforts against COVID-19, malaria, Ebola and other public health challenges.
Talking about his book, Panjabi said, "SAFER began as a question that I couldn't stop asking: Why do some people and communities come through crisis stronger, while others come apart?"
He continued, "What I found — in the science and in the stories — surprised me. Safety doesn't come from certainty. It comes from community and from the courage to reach toward each other instead of pulling away."

Panjabi claims that he saw firsthand how some people came out of a crisis stronger in emergency rooms, boardrooms and the Situation Room, and highlighted how they all relied on playbooks to navigate uncertainty.

However, he notes, "But what about our living rooms and our personal lives?"
He further notes, "I wrote SAFER as a playbook for all of us to navigate fear, mistrust and uncertainty. I hope you find it useful, and I look forward to talking more about this in the coming months."
