The idea behind organizing the tournament was to bring together the cricket-playing nations and make the sport more popular in the United States

Giving a new dimension to cricket diplomacy, a team of Indian players consisting of members from the diaspora took on the Australian diaspora in the US and lifted the first International Liberty T20 cricket cup.

The Indian side defeated the Australian diaspora in a match held in New York as part of the 75th Independence Day celebrations. The match was organized in the Bronx by the consulates general of India and Australia.
