President Joseph Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have formally announced the intention to run for the 2024 election. The announcement was made through a video on early Tuesday morning or four years to the day when Biden announced his campaign for the 2020 election. In the message titled “Freedom” Biden maintained that the battle is still on for the soul of the nation stressing that extremist Republicans under the banner of Make America Great Again (MAGA) are focussed on taking away rights and dividing the nation.
“When I ran for President four years ago, I said we are in a battle for the soul of America – and we still are. The question we are facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom, more rights or fewer,” Biden said. “I know what I want the answer to be. This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for re-election. I know America and I know we are good and decent people. I know we are still a country that believes in honesty and respect, and treating each other with dignity. We’re a nation where we give hate no safe harbor. We believe that everyone is equal, and that everyone should be given a fair shot to succeed in this country”, he added.
Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours.

“This is a pivotal moment in our history. For two years we have made transformational investments to build a nation in which everyone can be safe and healthy, find a good job, and retire with dignity. In response, extremists have intensified attacks on basic, foundational freedoms and rights” Vice President Kamala Harris said. “… they want to take away a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body. They attack the sacred right to vote and attempt to silence the voice of the people. And they try to block common sense reforms to save lives and keep Americans safe from gun violence. The Republicans running for President want to take our country backwards. We will not let that happen”, she added.
The video announcement of President Biden comes at a time when a raft of opinion polls have shown that a majority of Americans, including within the Democratic Party, do not want to see President Biden in the fray for the 2024 elections, his age cited as a major reason. Biden, already the oldest American President, will be 86 at the end of his second term in office should he be elected in 2024.
