Under India's Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make In India initiatives an indigenous Fuel Cell-based Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) will soon be fitted onboard the Navy submarine Kalvari.
This Fuel Cell-based technology has successfully been developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL) with domestic industry partners. The land-based prototype of the indigenous AIP has successfully been tested and the system has reached the stage of maturity for industrialisation.
In this regard, an agreement was signed between NMRL and Naval Group France, which will certify the AIP design for integration in the submarines.
