The United Kingdom House of Commons launched an ‘All Party Parliamentary Group’ (APPG) for British Gujaratis in the UK on March 6, 2023, to raise issues and concerns of the UK Gujarati community and provide consultation to both Parliament and the community for improved decision-making. The public launch is slated for April 25, 2023, coinciding with Gujarat Day, at the House of Parliament.

There are over 800,000 Gujaratis in the UK spread across metropolitan areas such as Greater London, East Midlands, West Midlands, Lancashire and Yorkshire. A news release issued by the member of Parliament Gareth Thomas stated that the Gujarati community desired an APPG to serve their needs and ensure that their views are properly presented to the government, local authorities and statutory bodies.

Thomas, also the co-chair of APPG, expressed delight in setting up the group in line with the vision and ambition of the Gujaratis in the UK. He recognized that the community have made tremendous contributions to the society and economy.

"The APPG on British Gujaratis will provide a space for Parliamentarians to learn about these concerns and aspirations of the Gujarati community and to collaborate with them on initiatives that promote the community's interests," the MP said. The APPG will allow British Gujaratis to engage with politicians on matters such as health, education, social and cultural needs, immigration, bilateral trade with Gujarat, India, and economic development in the UK, Thomas emphasized.

Secretariat head of the APPG, Sanjay Jagatia, noted that the APPG for British Gujaratis is a necessary and long overdue step. "I look forward to working in consultation with subject experts, community leaders, temples and groups to raise issues with the APPG that matter to the community," Jagatia added.
