Indian American Congressman Ami Bera was selected by Former Members of Congress (FMC) as the recipient of their 2023 Statesmanship Award, that recognizes individuals who “exemplify courage, commitment, and passion for furthering democracy, and who have demonstrated a life-long dedication to service.

Sharing his career trajectory while receiving the honour Bera said, “I am the son of immigrants, my parents immigrated here from India in the 1950s and I had a chance to live the American dream.” He stressed that he is only capable of receiving the honor because of the folks that came before him whether they were his parents, teacher, or previous member of Congress.

“My legacy is not determined by anything I do in my life, our legacy is going to be determined by what the next generation does. That's the definition of a statesman. It’s not about what we do but how our staff go on to do great things, how we touch lives, and how we empower next generation leaders to go and change the world,” the longest-serving Indian-American congressman said.

Lauding Bera’s commitment to service, FMC president L.F. Payne said, “Bera exemplifies pragmatism and a productive approach to legislating that FMC can consider to be essential for the success of the congress and this nation so we are honoured tonight to present him with a statesmanship Award.”

FMC is the premier non-profit focused on Congress, involving both former and current members of Congress all on a bipartisan basis. For more than 25 years, FMC’s Annual Statesmanship Awards Celebration has recognized outstanding congressmen and organizations for their Congressional service and commitment to improving the lives of others, according to the award's credentials.
