Three Indian–American medical professionals were named the recipients of the 2023 National Scientific and Health Care Achievement Awards for their contribution in the field of diabetes care and research by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
Raghavendra G. Mirmira, Mandeep Bajaj and Alka Kanaya as winners of the award in different categories along with six other medical professionals on March 14, 2023.
Medical teacher and administrator Dr Mirmira was conferred the 2023 Albert Renold Award for training and mentorship of diabetes research scientists and development of communities of scientists to enhance diabetes research. Dr Bajaj was awarded the 2023 Outstanding Physician Clinician in Diabetes Award for contribution to diabetes clinical practice and Dr Kanaya was awarded the 2023 Kelly West Award for her significant contribution to the field of diabetes epidemiology, ADA announced.
ADA CEO Charles "Chuck" Henderson said, "By highlighting the progress being made across the diabetes community, our awardees help move the needle and create lasting change in the lives of millions. With more than 133 million Americans living with diabetes and prediabetes, it is the work of these passionate professionals that will help us one day end this epidemic."
Every year, the ADA awards distinguished medical professionals in eight categories comprises Banting Medal for Scientific Achievement, Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award, Albert Renold Award, Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Diabetes Research Award, Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award, Outstanding Physician Clinician in Diabetes Award, Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes and Kelly West Award for Outstanding Achievement in Epidemiology.
The awardees will be felicitated at an awards ceremony to take place at the ADA's 83rd Scientific Sessions, held June 23–26, 2023 in San Diego, California, ADA informed.
